Dalt Vila in Ibiza Town: walk it on your own or book a guided tour?
Updated October 18, 2026 · 6 min read
Dalt Vila is the walled old town above the harbour of Ibiza Town, and you can walk it for free. The Dalt Vila walking tour with sangría is the guided version: 2.5 hours, €55 per person, 4.7 stars, but only 10 reviews. That is a thin base, so this page is as much about when you do not need it.
What Dalt Vila is
The old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. The Renaissance walls were ordered by Philip II in the 16th century to keep pirates out, and they count among the best-preserved of their kind in the Mediterranean. They have seven bastions. The main entrance is the Portal de ses Taules, with its two Roman statues. Inside, the lanes are narrow, steep and almost all cobbled. At the top is the cathedral of Santa Maria, and next to it the archaeological museum of Ibiza and Formentera. Walking the lanes needs no ticket; the cathedral and museums have their own opening hours and prices, which change with the season, so check at the door.
The guided options
| Tour | Duration | Price | Rating | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dalt Vila walking tour with sangría | 2.5 hours | €55 per person | 4.7 ★ · 10 | local guide, a glass of sangría or tapas at the end |
| Private guided bike tour of Ibiza Town | 2 hours | €150 per person | 4.4 ★ · 54 | bamboo bicycles, routes inside and outside the walls |
| Ibiza highlights tour from old town to beaches | 3.5 to 4 hours | €360, group of up to 3 | 4.2 ★ · 8 | old town, viewpoints, beaches, white villages, local food |
| Private tour of Dalt Vila and Es Vedrà | 5 hours | €412 per person | no reviews yet | by car with a local driver and guide |
Two of these have fewer than ten reviews and one has none, so the ratings say little. The bike tour is the best evidenced. Its price is per person, and the listing offers routes both inside and outside the city walls, so ask which one you get, because Dalt Vila is steep.
What a guide adds
The summaries promise “rich heritage and history” and a drink at the end. What you pay for is the story behind the walls and the lanes, and someone to answer your questions. What you do not need to pay for is the view: the ramp up to the Portal de ses Taules looks over the harbour and the old town, and it costs nothing.
Doing it yourself
A relaxed loop of the main sights takes two to three hours, longer if you stop at the museums. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the heat on the stone is lower and the light is better. Wear trainers rather than flip-flops, because the cobbles are slippery, especially going down. Start at the harbour, climb to the cathedral, and come back by a different lane.
When to skip it, and when not
Skip the guided tour if you want the views and the atmosphere and do not care for the history, or if you have a short day. Skip the private car tour unless you want Es Vedrà in the same trip: the article on Es Vedrà at sunset shows cheaper ways to see it. Think twice about the old town with a pushchair or a wheelchair, because of the steepness and the cobbles; no listing here states that it is accessible, so ask the operator. Book the walking tour if you want a guide and a drink at the end.

Our choice
For most people: walk it yourself, early in the day, and keep the €55 for a lunch in the old town. If you want a guide, the walking tour with sangría is the cheapest way to get one, with the caveat of the 10 reviews.
